A major refurbishment is planned for the Golden Lane Leisure Centre, located in London, UK, after the City of London Corporation approved a £10.4m ($13.2m) investment proposal.

Constructed in the late 1950s as part of the Golden Lane Estate, the Golden Lane Leisure Centre is a local authority facility offering subsidised access to residents.

It includes a swimming pool, tennis courts, sports hall, and gym facilities.

The refurbishment aims to address both internal and external structural needs.

Last refurbished in 2012, the centre requires updates to enhance its provision and future revenue generation.

City of London Corporation policy chair Chris Hayward said: “A key part of the City Corporation’s Resident Reset is ensuring that that they can take advantage of all that the Square Mile [London] has to offer.”

“This decision is another example of putting this ambition into action. We know that sport and leisure have transformative powers, enhancing mental and physical health, and building connections within the city’s diverse communities.

“We are proud to continue our significant investment in Golden Lane for the wellbeing of all our residents.”

This project is part of a broader £29m investment in the Golden Lane Estate by the City Corporation for undertaking major refurbishments.

This refurbishment programme includes upgrades to windows, roofing, heating systems, ventilation, insulation, and redecoration across all blocks.

This refurbishment forms part of a larger £110m Housing Major Works Programme covering 12 London housing estates.

City Corporation’s Community and Children’s Services Committee chair Helen Fentimen said: “This is an important step in the promotion of more community-based sport. The health and well-being of our residents is our number one priority. Our health is the most precious thing, and we must look after it.

“We want those that live in the city to be able to have access to first-class leisure and sporting facilities and by prioritising to refurbishing a valuable community asset we hope our residents will be able to enjoy being active both physically and mentally.”

Last year, the City Corporation introduced a new Sport Strategy for the city.

This venture outlines plans for sport investment over seven years, aiming to position London as a global city of sport by enhancing facilities and promoting community engagement.

Earlier this month, the City of London Corporation granted approval for a 36-storey commercial development at 60 Gracechurch Street.
